You can take the politician out of Fox News, but you can’t take the Fox News out of the politician. Former Fox News talking head Ben Carson, who last week was confirmed as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development even though he has absolutely no experience or education in either urban development or housing, made the following statement to employees of that department today:
“That’s what America is all about – a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, and worked even longer, even harder, for less, but they too had a dream that one day, their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”
Do we really have to spell out why this is wrong? Of course we do. This is the Age of Trump, in which the most ridiculous ideas are accepted as true.
Slaves didn’t pursue life in America. It was forced upon them.
Slaves didn’t work for less. They worked for no pay at all.
Slaves didn’t come to America seeking prosperity and happiness for their offspring. In many cases, they had been stolen away from their offspring.
Slaves didn’t see America as a land of dreams of dreams and opportunity. To them, it was a nightmare.
If slaves held captive in the bottom of slave ships dreamed of anything, it was they might escape and somehow find their way back home.
The sons, daughters, grandsons, grandsons, great grandsons, and great granddaughters of slaves were taken away from them and sold off to other masters far away, as if they were farm animals.
Slaves were not immigrants. They were prisoners. They were human beings sold as objects, with the Christian Bible used as justification for their oppression.
No one who believes that slavery was a path of opportunity toward prosperity and happiness deserves the privilege of any position in our federal government, much less the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
The time has come for Ben Carson to resign.
